How you start your morning can have a big impact on how you move through the rest of your day.
And no, I don't mean you need to wake up at 5 a.m., drink a green smoothie, work out for an hour, read five chapters of the Bible, and have your entire life together before 7 a.m. (Although, if that works for you, more power to you!)
A faith-filled morning routine doesn't have to be complicated or take hours. It can be as simple as giving yourself a few intentional moments to slow down, spend time with God, pray, read Scripture, or simply start your day with the right mindset. ย Letโs be honest: rolling out of bed just 30 minutes before you have to rush out the door for work probably isn't setting you up for spiritual or mental peace.
If you want to shift your perspective and ground your day in truth, creating an intentional morning routine is the best place to start. For me, a good morning usually involves two things: coffee and writing my prayers.
But there are plenty of different ways to create a morning routine that helps you connect with God. What works for one person might not work for anotherโand that's completely okay.
Here are some of my favorite ways to start the morning, along with a few ideas from some of my friends.
My Favorite Faith-Filled Morning Routine: Coffee & Prayer Journaling
Just like every other girlie out there, I love a good morning coffee.
Depending on where I am and what kind of morning I'm having, my coffee order might change, but that first cup has become one of those little things I genuinely look forward to. One thing that stays consistent is my prayer journal.
A few years ago, I went through a season where I was struggling with my faith. I caught myself wondering: Is God actually listening to me? Am I praying the right way? Is he answering me? A friend from my congregation suggested that I start writing my prayers down.
So I did.
And honestly, it transformed my prayer life.ย
Instead of simply saying a quick prayer and moving on with my day, writing my prayers down helped me become much more intentional. I could slow down and really think through what I was praying about.
I could write out the details of what was happening, the people I was praying for, the things I was worried about, the things I was thankful for, and the questions I was bringing to God.
It gave me a place to be completely honest.
And one of the most meaningful parts came later.
After that dry season in my faith, I was able to go back and read some of those old prayers. Looking back, I could see prayers that God had answeredโsometimes in ways I never would have expected and often in ways that were so much better than what I had originally asked for.
Writing down my prayers gave me the opportunity to see God's faithfulness over time.
If you're looking for a simple way to start spending more intentional time with God in the morning, prayer journaling is a great place to start.
You don't need a fancy journal or a complicated system. Just grab a notebook and start writing.
Digging Deeper: Summarizing Scripture
Another practice that helped me for a long time was copying scripture. Instead of just reading a chapter and closing my Bible, I would rewrite it in my own words, almost like I was summarizing the story for a friend.
This simple step forced me to slow down and actually think about what I was reading.
Who was involved? What was happening? Where did it take place? What time period was this? What was happening in the chapter before this one? WHat was the main point of the chapter? What does this tell me about God's character? Those extra moments unlocked a much deeper understanding of God's Word. Plus, because the scripture was fresh in my mind, I found myself referencing those exact verses during my prayer time.
You don't have to copy an entire chapter, either. You could choose one verse, a short passage, or even write a few sentences explaining what you learned from your Bible reading.
Faith-Filled Morning Routines: What My Gal Pals Do
There is no "one-size-fits-all" way to spend time with God. A few of my Friends have completely different routines and I love how each one has found something that works for her.ย
Here's what the gang does that will hopefully spark some inspiration!
The Color-Coded Scholar
One of my friends loves writing Scripture out word for word.
She usually writes about half a chapter each morning and makes the process fun by using different colored pens.
She'll highlight certain words, phrases, or ideas that stand out to her and use different colors to help organize her thoughts.
It's a simple way to slow down while reading the Bible and really pay attention to the details.
If you love stationery, colorful pens, highlighters, and pretty journals, this might be the perfect morning Bible study routine for you.
The Daily Devotional Devotee
Another friend starts her morning with a daily devotional.
Instead of immediately reaching for social media when she wakes up, she takes a few minutes to read her devotional first.
Sometimes the devotional speaks directly to something she's going through. Other times, it reminds her of someone else.
When that happens, she'll send it to the person she's thinking about.
I love this idea because it turns a quiet morning routine into an opportunity to encourage someone else and really start to promote community.ย
And if you're someone who struggles with knowing where to start when it comes to Bible study, a devotional can give you a little structure.
The Gym Bae
For my active friends, movement is worship.
This fitness fanatic likes getting her workout in first thing in the morning, so she combines exercise with time in Scripture.
While she's walking on the treadmill or lifting weights, she'll listen to an audio Bible.
It's a great reminder that spending time with God doesn't always have to look like sitting quietly at a desk with a Bible and journal.
Sometimes it can happen while you're walking, running, stretching, or getting your workout in.
The Podcast Stan
Another friend likes listening to a Bible podcast during her morning run.
She chooses podcasts that break down different books of the Bible or explain the historical and cultural context behind what she's reading.
This is especially helpful when you're reading a book of the Bible that feels difficult to understand.
Sometimes hearing someone explain the background, people, culture, or historical setting can make a passage suddenly make a lot more sense.
The Prayer Queen
And lastly the Mother that puts her family on the right track every morning.ย
She has structured her familyโs morning where everyone prays silently to themselves right when they wake up. Then when everyone is dressed and ready to head out for the day they all pray together.ย
This brings a strong prayer foundation to your family and sets an example for your kids that prayer is just as important by yourself and with others.ย
What a great way to connect with family and hold yourself to a little accountability.ย
More Faith-Filled Morning Routine Ideas
If none of those sound like you, don't worry. There are plenty of other ways to create a morning routine that helps you start your day with God. If you are short on time but still want to anchor your heart in faith before a busy day.
Here are a few ideas to try:
Listen to Worship Music
Put on worship music while you get ready for the day.
You can listen while you're making breakfast, doing your hair, getting dressed, or driving to work.
Sometimes you don't need a complicated routine. A few songs that help turn your attention toward God can be enough.
Read One Chapter of the Bible
If you're not sure where to begin, start small.
Choose a book of the Bible and read one chapter each morning. Don't worry about trying to read five chapters just because you think that's what you're "supposed" to do. Consistency matters more than quantity.
Pray While You Get Ready
Your morning prayer doesn't have to happen while you're sitting perfectly still with your eyes closed.
Talk to God while you're getting ready. Pray while you're doing your hair, putting on your makeup, making breakfast, or driving to work. Your morning can become a conversation with God rather than another item on your to-do list.
Recite Scripture While Getting Ready
Have a favorite Bible verse?
Try saying it out loud while you're getting ready. You could even put a verse on your bathroom mirror or somewhere you'll see it every morning.
Repeating Scripture regularly can help you become more familiar with it and give you something to think about throughout the day.
Keep a Gratitude Journal
Before you start thinking about everything you need to accomplish, write down three things you're thankful for. They don't have to be huge. Maybe you're thankful for your morning coffee, a good night's sleep, a friend who checked on you, or simply having another day to live.
Starting your morning by recognizing what you're thankful for can help shift your attention toward God's goodness.
Take a Morning Walk
If you love being outside, take your morning quiet time outdoors. Go for a walk while listening to Scripture, worship music, a devotional, or simply talking to God. You can combine movement, fresh air, and prayer into one peaceful part of your morning.
The "First 5" Rule
Give God the first five minutes of your day before checking emails, text, or social media. Just sit in silence, thank Him for a new day, and invite the Holy Spirit into your morning.ย
Start Your Day With Something That Reminds You of Your Faith
Your faith doesn't have to stay confined to your Bible, journal, or morning prayer.
Sometimes the little things you surround yourself with throughout the day can serve as reminders of what matters to you. A magnet on the fridge, a verse framed on the wall, a simple encouragement on a coffee cup.ย
That's one of the reasons I love graphic t-shirts.
Ultimately, a faith-filled morning routine is all about shifting your mindset and putting on the armor of God before facing the world. And honestly? Sometimes a physical reminder helps keep that mindset alive all day long.
A fun, feminine, faith-inspired graphic tee can be an easy way to incorporate your faith into your everyday style without having to overthink it.
Whether you're heading to Bible study, grabbing coffee with a friend, running errands, or simply having a cozy day at home, wearing something that reflects your faith can be a small reminder of what you started your morning focusing on.
So grab your coffee, open your Bible, write down your prayers, put on your favorite faith-filled tee, and go into your day knowing you don't have to have everything figured out.
Your Morning Routine Doesn't Have to Look Like Anyone Else's
One of the biggest things I've learned is that there isn't one "right" way to have a faith-filled morning routine. Maybe you're the girl who wakes up early and spends an hour reading her Bible. Maybe your listening to scripture on your commute. Or maybe you're currently just trying to remember to pray before you grab your phone.
That's okay, too.
The goal isn't to create the most impressive morning routine. The goal is to create a little space in your day to intentionally turn your attention toward God.
Start small. Stay intentional. And let your morning be a reminder that you don't have to face the day alone.
